Many people underestimate the importance of having a well-maintained blog on their website and often make it one of their last priorities. Not making your blog a top priority or not having a blog at all is a very big mistake- having a blog with optimized content for your audience can be what drives traffic to your site rather than your competition, and can give you a leg up on your search rank. Follow the guide below to make sure your blog content is fully optimized and helping your SEO efforts!

Overall Blog Post Structure

One of the first steps in optimizing the blog content on your website is understanding how each individual blog post needs to be structured. To start, make sure each post is between 500 and 1000 words. By doing this, you will not only help increase your SERP, but it will also ensure you have provided your readers with thoughtful, valuable and thorough information. Each post also needs to have a title and subheadings that are relevant to the topic of your content and contain keywords. As a final note, include images in each post- they increase visual appeal and help boost search ranking. Just don’t forget to include alt text for each image.

Keyword Research

Once you fully understand how you need to structure each blog, it is time to do keyword research and pick a topic. For those without any experience with keyword research, it may seem daunting- but once you get the process down pat, it will start to become a natural part of your blogging routine.

Use a tool like SEMrush or Google Adwords Keyword Planner to find variations of words and phrases that are related to your topic. Once you have done your research and created a list of keywords, narrow in on a specific topic, and include the related keywords naturally throughout your post. The operative word here is “naturally” – if you overstuff your blog with keywords in order to boost search rank, Google may flag your post and penalize you. Be sure to go back through and read your blog once it is completely written and decide if reads naturally or not.

Meta Descriptions, Title Tags & Alt Text

This part of optimizing content can be confusing because it is completely behind the scenes. To start, it will be helpful to learn the definition of these three terms.

Meta descriptions show up on the Google search underneath the title of your page.

Because they are descriptions of what the reader is about to click on, they should be accurate and persuasive in order to get the user to click your page over another and hopefully turn them into a repeat user. For SEO, your meta descriptions should contain keywords naturally and be around 160 characters. Meta descriptions also help the search engine understand what the page is about, which is why including good keywords is important.

Title tags encompass the text that users will see in their browser tabs and it is also yet another thing a search engine sees when it crawls your site. A title tag is essentially the title of your page and what users see in the browser tabs.

It’s okay if the entire title tag doesn’t fit in the tab because search engines use title tags in addition to meta descriptions to determine exactly what each page is about, which is why it is important that you include accurate keywords in these 70-character descriptions.

And lastly, for every image you include in your blog post, fill out the alt text box using keywords to accurately describe the image. Again, this will help search engines understand the meaning behind the image.

Keeping an updated blog is extremely important for businesses because it is an additional way for potential customers to find you organically, and when optimized correctly, can be what outranks your business over another. Follow the tips above to keep your business’ blog optimized.
