Since Kickstarter first launched it’s crowdfunding platform in 2009, funders have now pledged over one billion dollars on projects all before it’s fifth birthday. Today the crowdfunding platform continues to assert its dominance over other rewards-based crowdfunding sites like RocketHub and Indiegogo, putting the spotlight on the new way of raising capital for startups around the world.

Kickstarter Stats

  • Over 135,000 projects have been started with over 57,000 successful.
  • Over 42% of all projects have been successfully funded.
  • $913 is pledged on Kickstarter every minute. In 2012 this figure was $607.
  • In 2013, 3 million people pledged $480 million to Kickstarter projects
  • Kickstarter grew 238 percent in the last year.

With Kickstarter taking a leading position among crowdfunding platforms, on October 31, 2012, Kickstarter opened up to projects based in the UK for the first time. Over the first year more than £22 million was pledged to projects in the UK. Backers successfully funded more than 1,500 projects in all 13 categories. In September 2013, Kickstarter officially opened to projects based in Canada. Two months later in November Kickstarter opened to projects in Australia and New Zealand.

As Kickstarter points out on it’s blog, the most common pledge on Kickstarter is $25 (and has been for most of it’s existence), and the majority of successfully funded projects raise less than $10,000.

Kickstarter is a Global crowdfunding platform, as people in more than 90% of the countries on Earth have backed a Kickstarter project. Overall, more than 5.7 million people have backed a Kickstarter project, and almost 1.7 million people have backed two or more projects. As the platform continues to expand globally the growth in crowdfunding doesn’t look to be slowing down anytime soon.
